Creating Transformative Encounters
5 – 12 September 2022 in Tarragona, Spain
– in English, Catalan and Spanish
Organized and ran by La Fábrica de Piedra (Catalonia) & Egnsteatret (Denmark) in collaboration with Patí Català Calafell.
Creating Transformative Encounters is a workshop in Participatory and Human Specific Performance open to English-speaking participants from all countries. The workshop is addressed to artists and students within performance, acting, dance, music, visual arts, theatre production, and can very well be used in the process of developing new artistic material. Also therapists, teachers, and others with an interest in close encounters between people, can benefit from this work.
We will explore interactivity, participation and artistic honesty in different settings and create performative, interactive games and rituals between participating audience and performers.
Working individually, in pairs or in small groups, the participants will research an artistic language that speaks directly to the senses and replaces fiction with true here and now presence.
We will investigate many different forms of sincere and non-fictive communication which can activate strong emotional and sensorial responses. The boundaries of artistic intimacy between strangers will be challenged, evoking authentic, receptive and trusting modalities of participation.
Some of the specific themes and exercises will therefore be connected with:
- The creation of a sensorial universe.
- Devising and guiding sensorial experiences.
- The creation of a true personal connection, within a set frame of a performative universe.
- Exploring borders of emotional and intellectual interaction.
- Using non-traditional spaces for framing experiences with journey-like structures.
- Development of personal, biographical material outside of the typical storytelling frames.
- Development of different forms of open dramaturgies and labyrinth-like performance structures.
- Creation of small interactive group dramaturgies.
- Risk taking: the performer in the double role as both
guide and protagonist. - Physical interaction with a participating audience.
- Creating a non-invasive environment for physical communication.

Participant feedback"It was such a great experience, very intense. So many emotions came out. It was a very useful work of learning how to structure these transformative encounters, and my hope is that I can integrate this whole experience into my life when I get home." Maria-Gulia, Italy"I had really transformative meetings (Transformative Encounters) with some of the guests who were invited on the evening for our public viewings. Meetings that I will never forget and that I still experience the emotions from now and then, and some that I still tell others about." Valdemar, Denmark"The reason I signed up for the course was because I wanted to allow myself to delve into this world, where imagination has huge significance and I have been mega stimulated in my imagination and my curiosity has been fed to the full in these eight days. In addition, something has happened that I did not expect at all, namely that I have really got such a very sensitive feeling in my body. I can really feel that my body is so much present in this room right now." Nanna, Denmark"It has been a wonderful journey of structure and open space to both get down into some very concrete tools and methods, and down into my body with morning training. This open space challenges your artistic work in terms of how you have your practice." Viola, Denmark"The best thing I bring back home is that I really want to do theatre again. These days, I've had experiences that I haven't had since I started doing theater. It's really big to get back, this kind of starting point. A closeness with spectators, I have learned, and to get something back from a spectator – there is more than being applauded." Marianne, Germany
