Shrouded
A performance, an intimate encounter with an urban landscape and an exploration of what happens when the distance between us and our surroundings disappears.
We are in the middle of an ambiguous landscape; industry, meadow, harbour. On the edge of something. A non-place. Between concrete and rolling grass. From here we see a heap of textile. Is it moving? Imperceptibly, perhaps. At first. The distance collapses. We lose the overview. It's as if the figure grows out of place. Like an extension of the landscape we find ourselves in.
In the encounter between man and landscape - what emerges when we keep quiet, listen intently and give the landscape space to speak? What happens when we empty ourselves of our preconceived ideas and let the landscape think for itself in us?
These are some of the questions the Institute of Interconnected Realities (I-IR) explores with their new site-responsive work INDHYLLET, which premiered on 25 April in Vordingborg. The work invites a small audience to experience urban landscapes in a different and more intimate way through movement by performer Ida-Elisabeth Larsen and live sound composed by Santi Rzr. The landscape doesn't just act as a background or stage. It meets us, interacts with us. It seems that the landscape wants something from us. What does it want? How do we respond?
The choreography stems from the artists' dialogue with two specific landscapes, one in Vordingborg and one on Refshaleøen. Both places are composite urban landscapes, semi-abandoned non-places. The work has been created through the artists' bodily investigations of the landscapes. They have spent time with the sites, working with a technique that involves surrendering to the surroundings and allowing themselves to merge with them while being somewhere between sleep and wakefulness. Out of these intimate encounters, the work has emerged.
